Ridiculous Manhunt for $2.50 Heist!

Have you read this? The Daily News in New York had a segment about an ongoing investigation about a stolen iced tea beverage and sausage worth $2.50 for months now, dating back to last August! The Waterfront Commission is refusing to relent about the case, even though it reportedly was settled between the victim and the saucy sausage stealing iced tea thieving man ages ago. This took place at the Bayonne dock which traffics goods from New York and New Jersey. There are mob dealings, murders, etc., etc., and the Waterfront Commission chooses to hunt down witnesses for what wasn't even a full meal!

This is the same commission that was "was blasted in August 2009 - one year before the sausage investigation was launched - as home to corrupt execs barely better than the waterfront's notorious mobsters.
Officials were accused in a damning 60-page report of misusing Homeland Security money, keeping a convicted crook in business and surfing the Internet for porn. "

Another way the U.S. wastes money and resources.  *Sigh*

Chinese New Years Hotspots: NYC Part 1

Its only 3 days left(2 in the Eastern Hemisphere) before Chinese New Years! Even if you aren't Chinese or celebrate it, you can start now! Here's some possible destinations for you to visit in New York City.:

New York City-Chinatown-2/3/11: There will be a Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival taking place at Roosevelt Park, which is between Grand Street and Hester Street., from 11AM-3:30PM. Firecrackers are send to ward off evil spirits but it will be loud! That'll be followed by dancers dressed up in traditional dragon and lion costumes. After that, you can check out the local markets that supply fresh fish, meat, and vegetables. You can also expect to see various performances throughout the day on different notable streets like Mott St., Elizabeth St., East Broadway, and Bowery.

New York City-Chinatown-2/6/11 Actual New Years Day is a weekday so if you can't make it out, don't fret because there is a part two to the celebrations. The 12th Annual Chinese Lunar New Year Parade and Festival takes place this Sunday(be careful of the dates) from 11AM-4PM. This is the main event. There will be dancers, magicians, huge floats, marching bands, acrobats, and showcases by local organizations. Even the Navy and firefighters get in on the act! Chinatown will be decorated all over with banners and  flags that say gōng xǐ fā cái (it varies with native tongue), which roughly translates to "Congratulations and be prosperous" or "May prosperity be with you". The town will be reverberating with the sounds of the parade as it makes its way through nearly every street. Expect a larger crowd though.

(Tidbit: If you didn't know, red and gold are the colors used to celebrate. You can give out small red envelopes with gold writing filled with money to people as a gift. Other common gifts are dried scallops, large mushrooms, and ginseng.)

Pic of the Week 1/18/11

I've gotten busy so I'll only be posting a picture every week from now on(sorry). But this week's picture is an original. :)

107 Year Old Man's Story

Hi everyone! I've been busy lately, so sorry about the lack of posts. I just came across an article about Leonard McCracken, a man 107 years of age who is living on his own. He lives off his "savings, Social Security, and a lifetime annuity". Over the course of his lifetime he actually "never made more than $10,000 a year in his life" according to his son, Bob. That's amazing... 10 grand; a paltry amount to most people but he managed to get by. In fact he bought and sold 35 houses! His advice?
  • Never borrow more than you need and if you do, return it as soon as possible.
  • Work is money. In tough times, any work is salvation.
  • "Save and invest conservatively". Though he never reaped the benefits of a good stock market, he didn't lose most of his assets like many others in a recession.
  • Being healthy can rule out the huge medical bills you can accumulate if you get sick. He's 107 years old and only 8 years ago at the age of 99 did he fail an eye exam for his driver's license!
My point is, this man is the shining example of a thrifty man who has led(and still does lead) a healthy, happy, and self-dependent life. Mr. McCracken certainly has no "cracks"about him!

Toxic Waste is actually toxic!

Say it ain't so! The news of the day is that the company known as Candy Dynamics based in Indianapolis, IN has recalled their line of candy known as Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge® Chew Bars. Seriously. Well, its actually a relatively high level of lead that prompts this "voluntary recall" by Candy Dynamics.

From an FDA press release "A recent test performed by the California Department of Public Health has indicated that a lot (#8288A) of the cherry flavor of the above-listed product contains elevated levels of lead (0.24 parts per million; the U.S. FDA tolerance is 0.1 ppm) that potentially could cause health problems, particularly for infants, small children, and pregnant women."

24 times the tolerance level set. Good news for worried people is that all these products from raspberry to sour apple are being removed from stores.

So unless you want to eat some lead-filled sour candy I'd stay clear of this.
Beware of eating waste and sludge! :P

Video of the Day 1/11/11

In keeping with the topic of test-taking, TheRoflCakes' video of the day is "The Test" by irishgrenadier.
Edit: I've since deleted the posts regarding test-taking as they were out-dated. The blog has also been refocused and changed to The Synergy Complex.

I did not expect it to end that way! (I also like the Peanuts cartoon :D)
